Panchakarma-Inspired Naturopathy Protocols for Metabolic Syndrome: A Pilot Study
Abstract
A pilot study evaluating the effects of a modified Panchakarma-inspired naturopathy protocol on metabolic syndrome markers. 40 participants showed significant improvements in fasting glucose, triglycerides, waist circumference, and blood pressure over a 10-day intervention.
Metabolic syndrome — characterized by central obesity, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and hypertension — affects over 30% of the Indian adult population. Conventional management relies heavily on pharmacotherapy with limited lifestyle intervention.
This pilot study enrolled 40 participants diagnosed with metabolic syndrome in a 10-day residential naturopathy program incorporating modified Panchakarma-inspired protocols: therapeutic fasting, Virechana-inspired cleansing, Udvartana (herbal powder massage), hydrotherapy, and a calorie-restricted plant-based diet.
Post-intervention results: fasting glucose decreased by 18% (mean 142 to 116 mg/dL), triglycerides by 24%, waist circumference by 3.2 cm, and systolic BP by 12 mmHg. HbA1c showed a trend toward improvement at 3-month follow-up in participants who maintained dietary modifications.
These preliminary results warrant larger randomized controlled trials to establish naturopathy protocols as adjunctive therapy for metabolic syndrome.
